Quest for the Perfect Pants

This is a tale to illustrate how truly obsessive I had become about clothes. I mean Obsessive. About. Clothes.

About ten years ago, my sister-in-law gave me an olive, fair isle, cardigan vest from Eddie Bauer. I liked it but had nothing to wear with it. So I went online and found a pair of greyish olive khakis from Lands End overstocks. (I do all my shopping online.) And over time I just grew to love those pants. I wore them with the afore-mentioned vest. I bought a greyish-green argyle cashmere cardigan that went with them. I bought a pink corduroy shirt with small rosebuds and leaves the color of the pants. Etc.

Over the next several years, I wore the pants so much that they frayed at the hems and were no longer presentable to wear to the office. What to do? I has several outfits constructed around those pants. I freakin' loved them. And nobody made anything remotely like them anymore.

So I bought a pair of hunter green formal twill pants from Lands End. (I have single-handedly kept Lands End prosperous.) I liked the new pants ok, but they didn't have the same comfortable feel as the khakis.

Then I bought a pair of wool pants in a sort of heathered mossy green from a discount place. They weren't very good quality, and the fabric pilled. Plus, they had to be dry cleaned, and they weren't even remotely like my casual khakis.

Then I bought these from Eddie Bauer. Good color. I like the fabric, which is woven and slightly coarse, and I like the boot-cut style. But they are low waisted, and I feel silly at my age having to buy special underwear to wear low-riding pants. 'Nough said. I still wear them, but I'm careful about what top I pair them with. (Translate that into longer tops for coverage.)

I bought another pair from Land's End that weren't khakis. They are a slicker, dressier material (I forget what), but they are lighweight and machine washable. They're very nice—a good compromise between formal and casual—and I like them a lot. But they're not the same.

I also bought a pair of olive green, knit corduroys with an elastic waist. They work great under my sweaters, but they make me feel middle-aged.

So what did I finally end up with—five pair of pants in the olive/moss color range? I never wear the wool ones anymore, but each of the others has found its own niche in the crazy universe of Ruth's wardrobe. However, none of them has ever come close to being the perfect replacement for the pair I wore out.

The moral of the story? Don't let your identity get wrapped up in anything as external as a piece of clothing. And never try to recreate an idealized piece of your past. It's way too expensive and just plain futile.

P.S.  Anyone know where I can get a sage-green, knee-length, chino skirt? I spilled dishwasher soap on mine about five years ago, and it left a bleached-out spot, and I've been looking for a replacement ever since. (Just kidding.)

Oh Ruth, I love your ability to write about all of this!

Sage-green, knee-length, chino skirt...

Oh Ruth, these posts are really something.

Clothes are not my issue. For example, I own 3 black scoop neck J. Jill cotton tops. I wear them over and over and over.

This summer has done them in. What will I do now???

They go with my blue cotton skirt (also J. Jill), my green khaki capris (from Old Navy and older than I can admit to) and my black and white skirt.

Color... well not so much!!

I've been having trouble with pants all my life. but not just with color :).

I have a black skirt that I wear with everything in the winter, and when it wears out, I'm going to be so .... you know what!

Eddie Bauer doesn't make it any more.

LOL, Ruth, I have no shopping knowlege, savvy...

But I suddenly CAN relate.

I have a pair of workout pants that have a big hole, and I can't find them anymore!

So I DO have a clothes area I'm obsessed about.....

I'm like Fran, though.....I wear the same thing over and over, or I steal my kids' clothes.

I am the same with the pants issue. I have two pair I purchased from Fashion Bug almost four years ago, maybe five. I've worn them until they are barely presentable anymore. They are the low rise pants which I love because I'm so short and short waisted that they fit much better. Other pants leave the huge gap at the back, and the elastic, well I'm just not feelin' that yet. Maybe when I get older.

I love the idea of sage green. :) I wear a particular style of clothing and admit to being rather attached to it. It's kind of grown into something all its own now. I just follow its lead. :)

Oh Ruth...I can so relate as will most of your commenters. I don't know if it is really obsessive...some of us just have a hard time finding something we love, know we look good in and feel comfortable in. Sigh. Yep...My baggy jeans, and my very very old jean jacket which everyone...even Radar by now, wants me to ditch. HA!

Boy, Ruth, you sure got a big smile from me. And much too much nodding in agreement because I've been there :-)

Penney's has skirts like that. They also have really, really good sales. I rarely buy clothes, which is why our shopping trip the other night was such a treat (and so necessary!), and when I do buy something, I try to only buy what I LOVE, but then I don't want to stop wearing it when it's past its prime - 20 years is not unusual. Except for the weight fluctuations - I think I have something for every size, which translates in to a closet full of clothes, only some of which I can wear at any one time. Since I get in to a rut and wear my favorites over and over, it all works out. As you can see from the length of this comment along with others from the previous post, clothes are something we all take very seriously! But buying new ones because you've lost weight is such a GREAT feeling!!! P.s. All the rich people love to shop at Goodwill, so don't feel too guilty if you sell them to a consignment shop instead of donating!

I'm really picky about my clothes. My daughter gave me a wardrobe consultation for Mother's Day, part of which included personal shopping services. We still aren't done... I bet she's sorry she ever made the offer! Anyway, I have the worst time finding pants. BUT, I have found a brand a really like at Kohl's. They are made by Lee and claim to really fit a woman's body -- which they do! If you are interested I'll go look up the exact name and get it to you. I've also been reading "How Not To Look Old" while I'm getting better. Love it.

It's difficult for me to find pants I like and when I do find them...I wear them to death. ;) I have many pairs that I don't really wear. I sympathize with you on trying to replace those ones you really liked.

You crack me up, Ruth.
I can sooooo relate.

I know how you feel. I just stained my perfect, tan, wrapped, twill skirt, which I found new at a thrift store, with INK. Now, how the heck do I go about finding that again and it was a perfect match to the rest of my wardrobe!

Well, here's to you one day finding your perfect pants and if you happen to see a perfect, tan, wrapped, twill skirt next to it, be sure and let me know!

Ruth, you are going to lose me if every other post is going to be about women's clothing! (jk) :)

Or....if you find something you really, really like, get another one right away and save it for later (smile)!

I've noticed that long sweater vests (long enough to cover my backside) are finally back in style....I've been waiting about 15 years for those to reappear. Now I'm waiting for the sales...

There was a time when I fervently wished we all dressed in "Chairman Mao" blue work clothes like they used to do in China...it would certainly get rid of the fashion woes for many of us.

In some ways, it's very pleasant to have reached the far side of middle age...all these outward things just aren't so harrowing as they used to be; life itself is much more important...and anyway, didn't Jesus tell us not to worry about what to wear and what to eat? I'm slow learner, but I think I'm finally catching on.

I am enjoying this, since it is so far removed from my life its laughable. I only stop Parker from wearing t-shirts when the holes become way obvious! LOL. We are not into clothes, just keep me covered and warm and that's about all I ask. I have trouble finding something to wear to church!

Ruth, I didn't realize what a clothes-horse you were!! I should have known with all those beautiful sweaters and socks you knit!!!

Thanks for sharing. I sort of wish I was a bit of a clothes horse.

I hate to clothes shop and I tend to wear the same things over and over. But I love it when I find something that feels really good, that can make my day.

It is hard to know when I bring home a new piece of clothing, how it will wear. But if I find I am loving something, I try to go back and get it in another color.

Oh what we women go through! This is so funny Ruth! I love your sentence: "But each of the others has found its own niche in the crazy universe of Ruth's wardrobe." Priceless!

Ruth, I could send you a pair of Talbots weird green pants, but I'm sure my size is much bigger than yours! But you probably don't want another green pair.

I have way too many clothes and need to donate so many to Goodwill.

I go through the same thing with jeans! I love comfortable nice fitting jeans that I can wear dressed up or down and always with my cowboy boots. When I find a pair I wear them until they get holes. It then takes about 4 or 5 purchases to find the kind that will replace them. Then I buy two pair and wear them for a few years.

Try Goodwill......sometimes just what you're looking for shows up there. I was there the other day trying to find long skirts of substance to wear to church in the depths of winter.
