Blessing of the Animals

In honor of the feast day of St. Francis, we had a pet blessing at church today. Here is part of the liturgy we used.

O most holy God, you have bestowed upon humanity the gift of companionship from your creation. We pray that you would continue to bless us as we live with these creatures who teach us daily the values of trust and love. Bring us to a place in our lives where we may perceive that your hand is upon all of your created order, and so, honor you in how we treat your creation. In the name of Christ we pray. Amen.

Here are a few photos. Smokey is the black dog in the bottom shot, and the fluffly light dog with him is his friend Charlie.

I didn't get any photographs of the actual blessing itself. (Miscommunication about how the camera worked. My fault.) Even so, you can see we had a beautiful day for the service.

Oh! I feel bad for my dog Sidda! She has so few friends.....

That looks like fun!

I love this idea of a blessing service for pets. I think Smokey is blessed already to have such wonderful "parents".

how wonderful
I must be in another world..but I have never heard of this being done.

Radar would be the bad kid...like I was in church....he is such a trouble maker. but a blessing for him would be nice...his arthritis is getting the better of him these days and he is beginning to hobble.

How are you my beautiful southern belle?

So glad to hear your blessing service was a success. So was ours. There were so many dogs and a few cats. No fights, and lots of lusty barking during the service which kept us all smiling.

our catholic neighbour went to get a blessing for her korgi..here's hoping it won't 'nip' so much (it probably needed extra sprinkles, little 'lee' just can't help himself I think [g])
I love the picture of all those dogs..they are so chilled, like they know what is happening and who knows..they do?!
