A post I read on someone else's blog reminded me of this poem. I wrote it long ago, but I still like it.
PIGEON
I gave you love,
a wild, grey-dappled pigeon
with a green, iridescent neck.
And you said, "Where the hell will I keep it?"
I started to tell you that pigeons walk on ledges
or fly above the traffic,
while we stand below on the sidewalk
tossing bread crumbs.
But the moment you felt it stretch its wings,
you squeezed it in your hand
and strangled it.
I refuse to take it back,
the cold body and twisted feathers.
So I leave it on an altar
to wait for resurrection.

Good heavens, that's a powerful piece of poetry. :(
That's just wonderful!
Wow!!
There's some real truth there. I love your poems.
I'm not sure what to say...
gasping. for . air.. whew.
The poem is a good metaphor for the life of Jesus. For He was like that pigeon with the glorious neck. And as the pigeon took to flight, I think of how Jesus emerged as a strong leader who led the people in a different way than imagined. Then the leaders pinched him in and put Him on the cross. Yet 3 days later He rose after all!!!!
Thanks for the poem and visit the poem I just recently did on birth at www.scottrdavis.blogspot.com
hope you enjoy it!!!! Peace

I'm not a big fan of poetry, but this...wow. It's so simple and yet so powerful, I keep rereading it. I may have to print it out to read it some more...
Love it. I love birds, but never thought about writing a poem about a pigeon!!
Lots for me to think about! I love reading your poetry. You should post more of it.
Blessings,
Elizabeth
