Lookee what I have. It's March 30, and usually I don't even plant my lettuce until April. At this rate, we'll be eating salad by May 1. Yum.
I've already hardened these off and they will go in the planter some day this week. If we get frost warnings, all I'll need to do is cover them lightly with either plastic or fabric. Lettuce doesn't mind a slight touch of frost.
In a couple of weeks, I'll plant new seeds in my second lettuce planter (directly outside this time), so I'll have a nice little crop rotation going.
Ooh, and my green onion sets arrived today too. Now I just need to find time to get out in the yard.

Beautiful! A friend gave me homegrown lettuce a few days ago, and we loved it. Lucky you.
Oooh, nice. All Easter joy to you!
How do you do it? Find time, I mean, with all the fiction writing and black-and-white drawings of nudes and the colored still lifes and supporting Michael's project, and who knows what else, to plant lettuce and onions?
My hat is off to you.
Thanks, Bob. :)
I can't believe that we are all so joyful over lettuce, but there it is! Just an indication of the harsh winter.
Actually, Ruth, there's not a lot, but that lettuce is good to eat already!!!!!
How full of hope those lettuce leaves look! At my house, it would be short lived. The slugs all know where the salad grows...
You have been busy! I should get myself some grow-bags and plant up some salad this year!
Oooh - pretty! Do you grow swiss chard? It looks so beautiful in the garden with those orange and red stems. And plus it's a very mild green.

Yay! That comment above is well-deserved. Congrats! Love your lettuce photo and your garden plan sounds great. We'll be returning to IA in a couple weeks. Coming back a bit earlier this year so we can get the garden in! Happy Easter to you and Michael.
This makes me want to plant lettuce again. I always put the seeds right in the ground. There's nothing like the wonder of new life...even when it's lettuce.
The greens--colors and lettuces---are so beautiful!
